Frequently asked questions

Which category is my vehicle?

The Road Traffic Department sets the fee by weight. Most cars, SUVs, minivans and light pickups are under 5,000 lb (Category A). Larger trucks and buses fall into Category B or C. Your vehicle's weight is on its title or the manufacturer's label in the door frame.

When do I renew?

Vehicle registration and inspection expire on the last day of the owner's birth month. Renew each year at a Road Traffic Department inspection site, or the Administrator's office in Bimini/Cat Cay, Harbour Island and Spanish Wells.

What do I need to bring?

For a renewal: proof of age (passport, voter's card or birth certificate), your NIB smart card, a valid insurance certificate or cover note, and your driver's licence. A first registration also needs the bill of sale and the Customs vehicle information slip.

Are there other costs?

Insurance, which you need before you can register. Importing a car yourself? Excise duty, Customs fees, the environmental levy and VAT are paid to Customs before registration; the car import cost calculator estimates them.
