Price before VAT.

How this is calculated

Add VAT: VAT = price × rate; total = price + VAT
Remove VAT: price before VAT = total ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = total − price before VAT

We work in cents and round to the nearest cent. When taking VAT out, the VAT is whatever is left after the price before VAT is rounded, so the two always add back to the total you entered.

  • 10%: Most goods and services
  • 5%: Certain medicines and medical supplies, from 1 September 2025
  • 0%: Zero-rated goods and services, such as exports

Worked example

  • Adding 10% VAT to $100.00: VAT $10.00, total $110.00.
  • Taking 10% VAT out of $110.00: price before VAT $100.00, VAT $10.00.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in The Bahamas?

The standard rate is 10%, which applies to most goods and services. Selected medical supplies are charged at 5%, and some supplies, such as exports, are zero-rated at 0%.

How do I take VAT out of a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the rate. At 10%, divide by 1.10: a $110 price is $100 before VAT, and the VAT is $10. Taking 10% off the total would be wrong: that gives $99 and $11.

Do prices in shops include VAT?

Yes. Prices shown to consumers in The Bahamas must include VAT. On a VAT invoice between businesses, prices are shown before VAT, with the VAT added at the bottom.

Who has to charge VAT?

Businesses registered for VAT with the Department of Inland Revenue. Registration is required once taxable sales pass the threshold set by the VAT Act; smaller businesses may register voluntarily.
